Cristiano Ronaldo hopes Jose Mourinho can restore Manchester United's glory days.

The former Chelsea boss is close to finalising a deal at Old Trafford after agreeing to replace Louis van Gaal.

It has been another disappointing season at Old Trafford despite United's FA Cup success,

with the club again missing out on the Champions League.

Ronaldo , who played under Mourinho at Real Madrid, admits it has been difficult for him to see his former club's decline.

However, he believes his countryman can turn things around for the Red Devils.

"I think it's good. If it's something United wanted I think it's good," he told Spanish TV station La Sexta.

I hope Manchester United get back to being what they were because it's an impressive club but in the last years they lacked an identity a bit.

"And it hurts me seeing United like that because it's a club that I carry in my heart. I wish Mourinho can carry them back to the top."

Ronaldo has again been linked with a return to Old Trafford after his six-year stint between 2003 and 2009.

But he has no plans to leave Madrid - insisting Real remain the best club in the world.

"Right now, yes I am happy and I want to stay at this club," he added.

"I don't see any other club that is better than Real Madrid. If you weigh things up there is no better club.

"So all other clubs can forget about me because Real Madrid is the best."
