Wayne Rooney equalled Sir Bobby Charlton's goalscoring record for Manchester United as Jose Mourinho's side swatted aside Reading.
Rooney
made it 249 goals for United with his seventh-minute effort to stand
alongside Charlton, leaving the Reds skipper just one short of holding
the record outright.
United cruised to victory and a place in the fourth round with goals
from Rooney, Anthony Martial and a second-half double from Marcus
Rashford, to spoi former United defender Jaap Stam's return to Old
Trafford.
Mourinho's men made light work of Reading, currently
third in the Championship, and made in eight successive wins in all
competitions, the first time they have achieved that feat since 2009
under Sir Alex Ferguson.
Wayne Rooney had been stuck on 248 goals for United for 44 days,
searching for that elusive goal that would see him equal Sir Bobby
Charlton's all-time club record.
But the milestone goal duly came
in the seventh minute, Juan Mata providing the assist and Rooney
flicking the ball in with his knee, Charlton giving his seal of approval
with a smile from his seat in the directors' box.
Rooney's
future may be uncertain, but his place in United's history is assured,
with the 31-year-old destined to own the record outright in the coming
weeks.
